Pet summer fun and safety
Ah summer - the time to get out with the family and enjoy recreational activities. But remember that summer can be dangerous for pets so make sure that all the fun isn't spoiled by an unexpected emergency or illness.
Jogging can be fatal to your pet at this time of year. As the weather warms, humans can alter the type and amount of clothing worn and we also sweat more.
Dogs can change clothes and remain jogging in their winter coat. They can only cool themselves by panting and release a small amount of sweat through the foot pads.
This is not enough. Many dogs, especially active ones, will keep running to keep up with their owner. To prevent heat stroke, change the routine to early morning or late evening.
Consider your pet's housing. If it's kept outdoors, does it have sufficient shade and fresh water at all times?
If you live in a warm climate, it's a good idea to hose down the dog before work, at lunch or whenever you can to provide extra cooling.
Not all dogs are excellent swimmers by nature, especially if Fido has underlying health problems such as heart disease or obesity to contend with. Consider protecting your pet just like other family members with a life preserver.
If your pet is knocked off the boat or is tired/cold from choppy waters or a sudden storm, a life jacket could save its life.
Finally, if you're traveling outside of your veterinarian's locale, it's wise to check out some veterinary clinics or hospitals in the area that you are visiting before the need arises. It's better to be prepared for an emergency and not panic or waste valuable time.
Are you losing your pets to accidents? Do they wander and never return? Show them that you care. Keep your pets safe from harm with the petsafe dog fence. - 20759
